Three Basic Categories of Elder Abuse:

1.   Domestic Elder Abuse  The mistreatment of an older person by someone who has a close relationship with the Elder.  (Child, friend, relative or caregiver in the person’s home.)

2.   Institutional elder abuse   Any mistreatment of an elder in an institutional environment. (nursing homes, foster homes, group homes, and care facilities.

3.   Self-neglect or self-abuse   Characterized as the behavior of an elderly person that endangers his or her safety or health. When an older person fails to provide sufficient food, water, clothing, shelter, personal hygiene, mediation and safety precautions.

Types of Elder Abuse:

1.   Physical Abuse-any form of violence such as striking, hitting, beating, pushing, shoving, shaking, slapping, kicking, pinching, and burning. That may result in bodily injury, physical pain, or impairment.

2.   Sexual Abuse- non consensual sex of any kind with an elderly person.

3.   Emotional Abuse-infliction of anguish, pain, or distress through verbal or nonverbal acts.  Some example of emotional abuse- verbal assaults, insults, threats, intimidation, humiliation, and harassment.  Also, isolating an elderly person from his/her family, friends, or regular activities, or enforced social isolation.

4.   Neglect- failure to fulfill any part of a person’s obligations or duties to an elder.  Refusal to provide an elderly person with such life necessities as food, water, clothing, shelter, personal hygiene, medicine, comfort, and personal safety.

5.   Abandonment-desertion of an elderly person by an individual who assumed to take responsibility for providing care for an elder.

6.   Financial Exploitation is the improper use of an elder’s funds, property, or assets. Examples:  cashing an elderly person’s check without permission; forging an older persons signature; misusing or stealing another person’s money or possessions; and the improper use of guardianship, or power of attorney.
