Who We Are Picture With Glasses

the military, business, social services, local government, law enforcement and others. Some have lived here all their lives. Others have moved here recently.

Their common characteristic is wanting to make their lives more meaningful by helping others.

Who We Are
Our volunteers serve the community.

Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of the Virginia Peninsula, Inc. (RSVP-VP) has 700 volunteers for more than 100 organizations throughout the Virginia Peninsula. We serve the cities of Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson, Williamsburg and the counties of York and James City.

Our volunteers are at least 55 years old, with an average age of 74.   They come from every imaginable type of background: teachers, housewives, aerospace engineers,
Many enjoy a few years of retirement before committing to volunteering. There is such a wide range of community volunteer needs that we can find a spot for just about any experience or interest.

Many RSVP-VP volunteers enjoy the personal
touch; by tutoring school children;  providing pets for therapy at convalescent centers, providing information to visitors at the airport and being docents at museums; transporting people to medical appointments; delivering mail at the veteran's hospital, friendly visiting at retirement homes; delivering Meals-On-Wheels; staffing a crisis hot line. Organizations also benefit through help with clerical duties, telephone reception, assisting blood drives, participating in citizen safety patrols, serving on Boards of Directors and advisory bodies, working in hospital gift shops and similar activities.    For more opportunities, click here.

Vaccine to Prevent Shingles for Seniors. The Food and Drug Administration has licensed Zostavax (Merck & Co.) to reduce the risk of shingles in persons 60 and older who have had chickenpox. The vaccine helps to prevent the reoccurrence of the shingles (chickenpox) virus by boosting a person’s immunity. Shingles can appear and cause misery after being dormant for decades. The vaccine is not meant for persons on immune-suppressing drugs (including transplant patients). Check with your doctor for any possible side effects or other advisories about this new treatment.
